Stefan Burns – Pre Earthquake Indicators
This video from Stefan continues on yesterday’s video. He goes in depth on electromagnetic waves and how they may be used for forecasting earthquakes on Santorini (using data from an Italian station).
Silki – GPS Movements
Her video today focuses on GPS data from around Santorini and how some of the stations are showing ground movement & uplift. She also mentions other stations which have been on Santorini in the past but it is not clear if they still record data and if they do, who is getting that data.
You can see the raw satellite data showing ground movements here.
Santorini has three GPS ground monitoring stations.
SNT2 is showing considerable movement North, East and Upwards.
Station 048a is also starting to show movement outside of the “model” prediction.
SNTR is not showing data since 2020.
Amorgosi island also has a station “047A“. The “modelled” data is showing southerly movement and westerly outside of the trend. Also consistent readings show uplift which is outside the trend. However historically this stations shows a lot of up and down movement.
General Update – Tsunami Links
At the time of writing (10:34GMT), there has already been 7 earthquakes over 4.2 on the 12th of February. The most we have had is 14 on the 6th but the day is still young…..
The Greek government has said a large earthquake is possible. Which hints that a tsunami is also a possibility.
-It may be worth bearing in mind that tsunamis are not unknown in the Aegean sea with evidence even in the Thermaikos Gulf of more than one tsunami in history, the most recent occurring in 1902. This paper goes into detail on tsunami evidence around the Thermaikos Gulf. The same paper here with nicer formatting.
